Extinction Rebellion Belgium

This is an emergency.

Floods, droughts, epidemics, famines, climate refugees: we can no longer deny that our lives are threatened, and it is but a question of time before each of us suffers the consequences.

We, citizens of a developed country, are fully aware that the current economic system is responsible for the situation. Our individual efforts, petitions and demonstrations will never be enough to face large multinational corporations squeezing resources out of the Earth and ruining ecosystems with the blessing of our governments.

Stepping out of denial and questioning the economic model that led to this situation is our nations’ duty. Instead, our government is dodging the responsibilities they signed for in the Paris Agreement.

When a State deliberately abandons its duty to protect the citizens, the social contract is broken. Rebellion then becomes our most sacred right, and our most critical duty. Because every tenth of a degree counts, because every life counts and because every hour counts, we call for civil disobedience. We are prepared to break the law and suffer the consequences, including imprisonment. The rebellion has just begun. For life.
Our Demands

Tell The Truth

We demand that the government declares a Climate and Ecological Emergency, recognising the need for rapid transformation of our economic system.

Act Now

We demand that the government enacts a comprehensive, legally-binding National Emergency Plan which phases out the extraction and import of fossil fuels by 2025, and prioritises restoration of biodiversity and the preservation of our natural environment.

Beyond Politics

We demand a Citizens' Assembly and a Youth People Assembly, equipping our regions and communities with the resources and the authority to ensure a managed transition to an equitable post-growth society.

Our Principles and Values
1. WE HAVE A SHARED VISION OF CHANGE
Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.
2. WE SET OUR MISSION ON WHAT IS NECESSARY
Mobilizing 3.5% of the population to achieve system change – using ideas such as “Momentum-driven organizing” to achieve this.
3. WE NEED A REGENERATIVE CULTURE
Creating a culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable.
4. WE OPENLY CHALLENGE OURSELVES AND THIS TOXIC SYSTEM
Leaving our comfort zones to take action for change.
5. WE VALUE REFLECTING AND LEARNING
Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences.
6. WE WELCOME EVERYONE AND EVERY PART OF EVERYONE
Working actively to create safer and more accessible spaces.
7. WE ACTIVELY MITIGATE FOR POWER
Breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.
8. WE AVOID BLAMING AND SHAMING
We live in a toxic system, but no one individual is to blame.
9. WE ARE A NON-VIOLENT NETWORK
Using non-violent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.
10. WE ARE BASED ON AUTONOMY AND DECENTRALISATION
We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion.

FAQ

How is XRY Belgium radical but not extremist?
The answer to that question is being written. Come back in a few days

Is XRY Belgium anti-capitalist?
The answer to that question is being written. Come back in a few days

How far can non-violence go?
"Non-violence: A situation in which someone avoids fighting or using physical force, especially when trying to make political change." - Cambridge Dictionary

In the name of XRY Belgium, and because we are in the Extinction Rebellion network, we will respect this definition of non-violence. While some people could, we do not consider actions that could degrade a tool of our capitalist system, such as a billboard or an ultra-polluting factory, as violent.

Note: We respect those who have made the choice to be violent or those who have made the choice to never damage anything and we will continue to fight with them for a better world. We think that the diversity of strategies is very important in our fight.

How is the movement organized to be as horizontal as possible?
The answer to that question is being written. Come back in a few days

What is the relationship between XRY Belgium and Police?
Every member has the right, if not the duty, to have an opinion on the place of the police in the revolution against the system we are leading.

We do not blame or shame the policemen as individuals, but we are strongly and openly against police repression and violence, even more so in the case of a non-violent movement. We also believe that the police should remain apolitical.
